Growing explorers will spend the week discovering the excitement of hiking and outdoor adventure. With guidance from Meadowbrook faculty member Jonathan Schmid, a trained wilderness first aid instructor and avid hiker, campers will learn practical skills for staying safe and confident on the trail, such as reading simple maps, understanding Leave No Trace principles, preparing a day pack, identifying common plants, and responding calmly to minor outdoor challenges. Each day features a new local hike, encouraging teamwork, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for nature. The adventure continues with a special Thursday-to-Friday overnight, giving campers even more time to connect, build independence, and enjoy the outdoors together. The week culminates in a longer Friday hike, where the group will put its growing stamina and outdoor know-how into practice during a memorable backcountry-style adventure. Because this program takes place fully outdoors, campers must be prepared to hike three to five miles over uneven terrain in all weather, rain or shine.
